Mobility Scooter Support

National Express is currently working with a number of other bus operators around the UK to help standardise the procedures for carrying mobility scooters on buses.

This initiative, which is being led by the Confederation for Passenger Transport (CPT) was recently launched by Transport Secretary Norman Baker and allows mobility scooter owners to be issued with a special permit for travel (as shown below) on all participating operators buses.

The permit (as shown left), which will be personalised for the individual passenger will only be issued after the scooter has been authorised and the user has received appropriate individual training. Due to their size, only certain types of mobility scooter will be permitted to travel on buses.

Please note that this permit is NOT a form of payment, and the passenger must pay a cash fare or show a valid travelcard or concessionary pass, which should be recorded in the normal way. The permit does not entitle the mobility scooter user to any priority over other passengers and, as with wheelchair and pushchair users, any empty bus space is allocated to passengers on a first come, first served basis.

Full details of the scheme are set out in the CPT Code for the Use and Acceptance of Mobility Scooters on Low Floor Buses leaflet (PDF) or the Wheelchair, Buggy and Mobility Scooter Guidance section.

National Express will be arranging a ‘testing’ process for potential mobility scooter users in the Coventry area at the end of September. For any enquiries please email busmobility@nationalexpress.com or ring 0121 254 7211
