Xplore Dundee’s encouraging people to hop on the bus to visit statues sited across the city for Oor Wullie’s Bucket Trail.
The trail, which was launched on Monday 27th June sees 54 individually-designed statues of the comic book character placed at various sites across Dundee, plus one in Carnoustie at the Golf Links. Once they’ve been in place for the duration of the summer, the statues will be auctioned off to raise money for the Archie Foundation, which is aiming to fund twin operating suites for the childrens hospital at Ninewells.
Xplore Dundee supported the launch by taking some of the key statue sponsors on a mini-tour around the city centre and West End, visiting just a handful of the statues on the Trail, including ‘The Adventure of Discovery Never Ends’ at Slessor Square and ‘Oor Lilies’ at the Botanic Garden.
The bus operator has produced its own map featuring the statues’ locations, and highlighting which buses customers can catch to visit as many as possible by public transport. Most of the colourful sculptures will be accessible by bus, or a short walk away from a bus stop. The map is available at the operator’s Travel Centre, or online at the Xplore Dundee website and social media pages.
In addition, Xplore Dundee will be launching a ‘Where’s Wullie?’ competition in July – customers will be asked to identify a number of statues from a close-up photo, and state which bus services to can catch to visit each one. Winners will bag themselves a special goodie bucket full of Oor Wullie-themed prizes. The competition will begin during Catch the Bus Week (4th-10th July) with more details to follow on social media.
Xplore Dundee is also a co-sponsor of the GLOW statue for Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, situated outside the DACC building at City Quay.
