Perry Barr bus driver scoops top award

A Perry Barr bus driver has scooped three awards at the ‘Bus driver of the year’ contest – beating competition from over 100 of the country’s best bus drivers.

Darren Dunbar ranked 5th overall in the competition but also drove off with awards for Best Newcomer and the ‘Best overall National Express competitor’ award. Darren and three fellow drivers from National Express West Midlands and Coventry competed through 14 rounds at the final in Blackpool last month. Yardley Wood bus driver Keith Gumbley (aged 26) was also commended for being the youngest contestant to compete.

The 106 finalists were whittled down from thousands at quarter finals earlier this year. To reach the Blackpool final Darren and his colleagues excelled in a series of advanced driving manoeuvres, and displayed excellent knowledge of the Highway Code and superb customer care.

Darren is based at National Express’ Perry Barr garage and regularly drives on the Sutton Coldfield bus services across Birmingham. He was encouraged to enter the competition by co workers who commended his safe, responsible driving.

Kevin Belfield, Director National Express West Midlands, said: "The Bus Driver of the Year competition brings together Britain’s most talented and responsible bus drivers and thoroughly tests their ability, knowledge and attitude to the job. We have received numerous compliments from passengers about Darren's driving and friendly attitude so we knew he’d do really well. Darren is a fantastic driver and we are proud he works for National Express."

Darren said: "I was stunned when the results were announced. I competed against some of Britain’s best drivers and was delighted just to reach the final. Taking the award back to the garage was a great feeling and everyone at work has been so supportive. I think having a passion for your job makes you a good driver and I’m always courteous to my passengers and want to provide the best service."

The Bus Driver of the Year competition is a national event with contestants from England, Scotland and Wales and has been running since 1967. Last year National Express West Midlands driver Paul Sikora placed third overall in the competition.
