Commuters in the West Midlands could save up to £400 before Christmas on fuel and parking alone by leaving the car at home and catching the bus to work.
National Express West Midlands calculated the average costs of fuel per mile using the AA's figures and the cheapest season tickets in Birmingham's biggest car parks. National Express West Midlands figures are based on daily journeys in and out of Birmingham city centre five days a week. These figures are worked on average traffic rather than the more fuel consuming rush hour traffic and don't include depreciation as a result many commuters may find they save even more.
The bus operator then compared the costs of petrol and parking on consumers (£250 a month) to the cost of their monthly travelcard (£46). The result is that during the two months leading up to Christmas commuters can save £400.
Peter Coates, Interim Managing Director, National Express West Midlands said:
"The rising cost of running a car and high fuel costs is having an impact on people's pockets, but catching the bus is cheaper and with our Santa discount deal, people can get even better value for money."
"Aside from the big savings our customers will make during the most expensive time of year they also don't have to drive at a time when many offices go for after work drinks and the weather is getting worse by the day. Our customers also get travel around the region after work and at the weekend making nights out and shopping trips easier and better value too. All round catching the bus this winter is a winner!"
The annual saving made by commuters who use the bus not their cars is £2462. The saving is on the price of fuel and city centre parking in Birmingham.
