Beetle drive boosts bed appeal

Dundee bus drivers and Xplore Dundee have helped buy 14 beds for local children who have nowhere to sleep.

Employees Ross Murdoch and Allan Fordyce organised a Beetle Drive on Saturday evening (24th October) to raise money for the Cash for Kids, which helps disadvantaged young people in the city and surrounding areas.

The pair decided to revive this traditional game to support the charity’s Bed Appeal which aims to provide beds for 200 children in the local area who are either sleeping on the floor or sharing with siblings and parents. Ticket sales and a raffle raised £1,300 for the campaign and the bus operator has also donated £100 to bring the total to £1,400, which will buy 14 beds.

The Beetle Drive was extremely well supported by local businesses – The Barrels pub in the Hilltown hosted the event and a wide variety of prizes were provided by First Drive Tayside, Dundee Museum of Transport, Muirhead Stables and Vita Dental Spa, among others. Xplore Dundee supplied two tickets for the Strictly Come Dancing live show including return coach travel.

Ross said: “Every child deserves a bed of their own and that’s why we wanted to organize the Beetle Drive to help support Cash for Kids’ latest appeal. I am just delighted that our event, plus the donation from Xplore Dundee, will help to provide 14 beds for local kids, and I want to thank everyone who supported the event, who came along or donated a prize – you’ve helped to make a real difference to the lives of local families.”
