It's time to Xplore Dundee

National Express Dundee is changing!

From Friday 11th September 2015, the local bus operator will be known as Xplore Dundee.  The new name is joined by a new look, with an increasing number of buses now operating with the company’s brand new green livery, designed in partnership with students from Dundee and Angus College.

Five new Wrights Streetlites are also joining the fleet and there has been a refresh of the bus network, with new timetables effective from Sunday 13th September, offering easy to use, turn-up-and-go services.  Even the paper timetables have received an overhaul, with a redesigned layout and maps for each route, clearly showing the journey, fare stages and points of interest for each service.

Each of the bus operator’s key routes has also been assigned a colour, to make it easier for passengers to spot their regular services around the network.  These colours will be displayed on the timetables and will correspond with colours added to the tops of the vehicles.  This feature was an important part of the bus rebranding project undertaken by the students of Dundee and Angus College; Ryan McGinnis, Georgia Gray, Lisa Cavell and Gillian Annandale have worked closely with National Express’s own bus designers to create a new livery for the operator’s vehicles which echoes the transport heritage of the city, while taking it forward into new design territory.

Ryan says they’re really proud of the final product:

"It's been surreal seeing our buses travelling around Dundee on a daily basis. We've thoroughly enjoyed the entire process, on both a creative and personal level. Working with a major client such as National Express has given us invaluable experience and filled us with immense pride, creating something as iconic as the buses for our city.

“I speak for the entire team when I say thank you to both Xplore Dundee and Dundee and Angus College for this incredible opportunity. We will carry forward this experience for many years, and hope that local people enjoy their newly designed bus service."

Dundee became the first UNESCO City of Design in the UK last year, a prestigious award that recognises the huge contribution the city has made to design worldwide.

Stewart Murdoch, chair of UNESCO City of Design Dundee and Dundee's Director of Leisure and Communities, said:

“Dundee is very proud of its historical design achievements and the vibrant communities of designers living and working in the city today. We’re delighted to see such a prominent company working with talented students from Dundee and Angus College to look at how new designs can be used for their business.

“Design covers a great range of disciplines, but with a common focus on delivering a better experience for people. These students have benefited tremendously from working on a real commercial project and I’d encourage other companies to think about how they can engage with designers and students in Dundee, from Dundee and Angus College and Abertay and Dundee Universities.”

More than £1m has been invested in the company’s overhaul and it’s hoped the people of Dundee will embrace the new-look buses and continue to enjoy the same reliable, value for money bus service they have come to expect in the city.

Managing Director of Xplore Dundee Elsie Turbyne said:

“This is a fresh new look for our business – it’s one we’re very proud of and we hope our customers will be, too.  This is our city, these are their buses and we want to do our bit to ensure Dundee’s public transport system is top-class, at a time when our city is growing, developing and looking to the future.

“We recognise we have an important role to play in people’s daily lives – we carry them from home, to work, school, family and friends and we’re doing our best to ensure that each journey is as easy and enjoyable as possible.  I am confident that our investment in these new vehicles, along with improvements to the timetables will take our services to the next level.”
