A National Express West Midlands Driver Training Officer has been named an Unsung Hero at the company’s recent Values Awards ceremony.
Wayne Jackson, based at the bus operator’s Walsall garage, was announced as the winner thanks to his enthusiasm and dedication to operational excellence. He will now go forward to the National Express Group international final, where he’s up against colleagues from Spain, Morocco, Bahrain, North America, Germany and others from the UK.
Having joined the company as a driver in 1995, Wayne has progressed through various roles over his 23-year career with the company, including instructor, accident and claims handler, operations supervisor, to his current role as driver training officer.
Colleagues nominated Wayne for the award for the excellence he shows in his everyday work - but also for the way he goes above and beyond. Wayne created a Toolbox Talk to help educate bus drivers and shunters about the dangers of fuelling and moving buses. It was so well received that it has now been incorporated into the company’s induction process.
Matt Reynolds, Operations Manager for Walsall at National Express West Midlands, said: “Wayne is a real unsung hero in our business. He is exemplary, passionate and strives for excellence in his own and everybody else’s performance. His significant contribution to our Lytx DriveCam roll-out and his coaching involvement with our Walsall drivers is one of the biggest factors that has helped to drive down our preventable collision rates by over 50%.”
In addition to his role as Driver Training Officer, Wayne embraced the opportunity to lead on the Lytx DriveCam project, rolling it out in his Walsall garage with great success.
Lytx DriveCam is helping National Express West Midlands to improve road safety and driving standards. It records events such as hard braking or sharp turning and is used to help coach bus drivers, reducing collisions and near misses through improved driving skills.
