A Walsall bus driver stole the show at a global awards ceremony after saving the life of a 17-month-old girl who had stopped breathing.
In recognition of his heroic efforts, 37-year-old Steven Welsh was invited to join colleagues from across the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Bahrain, Spain, Morocco and North America, at the National Express Group Values Awards, held at the London Transport Museum.
During the ceremony, presenter Victoria Fritz shared Steven’s story with a packed room, before announcing him as the winner of a special Chief Executive Award. He received a standing ovation as he collected the award from National Express Group Chief Executive Dean Finch.
On Thursday 12th April 2018, Steven had been driving the National Express West Midlands 29 service from Walsall when he noticed a man get out of a car with a young toddler in his arms. 17-month-old Evie-Mai had stopped breathing after having a fit and swallowing her tongue. Evie-Mai’s father was terrified and shouted for help.
Bus driver Steven safely stopped his bus and immediately went over to help, prising open little Evie-Mai’s mouth, which had locked shut, and cleared her airways so she could start to breathe again.
Evie-Mai’s mother, Charlotte Millington, said “Evie’s dad and I are unbelievably thankful for what Steven did. He saved our little girl’s life and we wish there was something we could do to show him how grateful we are. I hope we stay in contact so Evie-Mai will grow up knowing that he is her superman.”
National Express Group Chief Executive Dean Finch said "We are all extremely proud of Steven for saving Evie-Mai’s life. It’s not easy to remain calm in such a distressing situation but he didn’t hesitate to help and he did the right thing. I was delighted to be able to present my Chief Executive Award to recognise his heroic efforts.”
National Express West Midlands driver Steven Welsh said “I have been simply blown away by the recognition I have had and by the support I have had given to me by colleagues. This one’s for Walsall.”
The annual National Express Group Values Awards was launched across the National Express Group during 2012. The awards ceremony celebrates and recognises the work of teams and individuals across the global business, which employs 47,000 people worldwide.
