Ways to give yourself a boost this World Mental Health Day

Published: 10th October 2023

Find ways to improve your wellbeing and feel happier

It’s a good thing that mental health is taken much more seriously these days, but it’s always important that we take care of our minds so that major issues are less likely to arise in the first place.

October 10th is World Mental Health Day and we want to encourage all of our passengers to do something to make themselves happier and healthier. Maybe some of the below ideas would be useful for you…

Get some fresh air

We’re lucky to be surrounded by so many green spaces, parks and quiet areas in Coventry. From War Memorial Park to Spencer Park and Coomb Abbey, we can take you to plenty of places to get out in the open air.

Fresh air and sunlight have both been scientifically proven to elevate your mood and reduce stress, anxiety and depression. (mind.org.uk). So be sure to get your daily dose of Vitamin D and clean air this World Mental Health Day.

Be with people or on your own

The interesting thing about people’s minds is that they all operate in different ways. For instance, some people feel healthier and most at ease being around people, while others prefer to be alone.

So whatever your needs are this World Mental Health Day, we can assist! Reach out to friends and family, check-in and organise a fun trip out together. Our Group Saver tickets will even help you cover the costs.

On the other hand, if you feel some alone time would benefit you. Taking time out to be with your own thoughts by going for a walk, reading or even listening to music can help.

Treat yourself

Now we all know money feels a little tighter right now, but if you’re in need of a treat (and we all are sometimes) October 10th feels like as good a date as any.

Why not head over to do some high street shopping at West Orchards Shopping Centre or Central Six Retail Park?

Alternatively, if you’re not looking to spend much money, give yourself a little sweet treat or grab some comfort food from your favourite place. Everyone knows calories don’t count on World Mental Health Day.

Sweat it out

Exercise is one of the best ways to support your mental health. There have been countless studies on the effects of exercise on our bodies and brains, dropping knowledge just like this…

‘Researchers found that the participants felt more content, more awake and calmer after being physically active compared to after periods of inactivity.’ (mentalhealth.org.uk)

Between the release of endorphins (happy chemicals in the brain), the camaraderie of being part of a team or club, as well as seeing the positive physical benefits take shape, exercise is clearly pretty great.

While it’s easy to become daunted by the idea of being part of a gym etc, maybe just start with a small change. Walk or bike to a further bus stop than usual or walk up and down the stairs a bit more.

However, if you are ready to throw yourself into some more exercise, you’ll find plenty of fantastic gyms, studios, health centres and more all over Coventry. Our services are sure to be able to connect you to anything from rock climbing and martial arts, to dance, gymnastics and everything in between.

Is it time to talk?

If you feel like you’re at a point where you need to talk to someone about what you’re going through, remember there is always something you can do.

Birmingham Mindbirminghammind.org, this organisation has been helping people since 1962 and are ready to do the same for you. Whether you want to chat online, learn some positive methods to help with mental health issues or simply talk to a professional, Birmingham Mind is there.
