National Express’s Garry eyes up international award

A National Express West Midlands CCTV operator has been given a Business Impact Award at the company’s recent Values Awards ceremony. 

Garry Davies, based at the bus operator’s Pensnett garage in Dudley, identified an offender who had caused significant damage to buses. His stellar work lead to the offender being arrested, charged with paying £2,000 worth of damages and also having to spend 19 hours cleaning as part of a restorative justice scheme.

Colleagues nominated Garry for the National Express community value award because of his significant contribution and determination in reviewing CCTV footage to assist the company, the police and the Safer Travel team with driving down criminal activity on the bus network. He will now go forward to the National Express Group international final, where he’s up against colleagues from Spain, Morocco, Bahrain, North America, Germany and others from the UK.

Garry has been with National Express West Midlands since 2010. As a CCTV operative he analyses video footage from the company’s vehicles. This can include collisions or crime-related incidents such as vandalism.

Following several reports of a male damaging bus seats and cameras last summer, Garry diligently reviewed hours of CCTV footage. He managed to uncover a link with 12 incidents involving the same offender and his determination and patience lead to the successful prosecution of the vandal.

Garry’s exceptional CCTV analytical skills also helped in the successful prosecution of a passenger that spat at a bus driver.

Rachel Crump, Safer Travel Partnership Inspector, said: 

"We work closely with National Express West Midlands to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour on the bus network and CCTV has helped us achieve a 75% success rate in identifying offenders."

"Thanks to Garry's determination, patience and tenacious approach to viewing hours of CCTV footage, he was able to uncover a link with 12 offences which helped us to identify and prosecute an offender."
