Company Qualifier - Bus Driver of the Year Competition Results

Company Qualifier - Sunday 28th July 2013

Company final for our Bus Driver of the Year competition for our West Midlands and Coventry Garages to identify our winners and representatives for the National UK Bus Driver of the Year 2013 Final in Blackpool on Sunday 8th September.

Luckily for all the competitors and even more so the marshals, the rain held off until the end when all was complete. It was a highly successful and enjoyable day for all. The competition was supported by West Midlands Traffic Police, who attended to conduct our speed exercise along with local guide dog users who came to speak with our Drivers about how they use our services and to also take part in our mystery element to the competition. Other exercises included bus stop manoeuvres, water containers on the platform, chicanes , braking exercises and tricky tight obstacle avoidance through the 'devils turn' also known as the very tight entrance gate to the Stadium! All of our competitors dealt with the situations they were faced with and were individually scored on each element.

The competition came to a close and all the competitors patiently awaited their fate in the final results call delivered by Managing Director UK Bus, Peter Coates and Head of Training and Driver Recruitment, Mark Simcox.

Congratulations once again to all and here's hoping we can bring back that title again and hold on to having the National UK Bus Driver of the Year Driver from National Express Bus!

The final placings were as follows;

  • 1st Place - Stephen Bate from Walsall Garage, scooping 1st prize of £300 and a weekend trip to Paris, along with a guaranteed place at the National final in Blackpool and representing National Express West Midlands
  • 2nd Place - Paul Jarvis from Birmingham Central Garage, our current title holder for the National UK Bus Driver of the Year 2012/2013 competition, scooping his prize of £200 and his guaranteed place at the National Final in Blackpool again representing National Express West Midlands and fighting to hold on to his title!
  • 3rd Place - Bob Green from West Bromwich Garage, scooping 3rd prize of £100, along with a guaranteed Final place at the National Final in Blackpool and representing National Express West Midlands
  • Highest Placed Coventry Competitor - Kaiser Mahmood, who will be representing Coventry Garage at the National final in Blackpool and representing National Express West Midlands

A huge congratulations to all our finalists above and we wish them the very best of luck in representing National Express West Midlands and Coventry at the National Final in Blackpool on Sunday 8th September 2013. A continued congratulations to all our other competitors who attended and took part on Sunday, to achieve a position to attend this event is highly commendable and is down to an excellent standard of driving, a sound understanding of their role and the legislation surrounding PCV driving, plus an impeccable record.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the event on Sunday from all the Training staff and local Garage staff who marshalled at the event, the local Garage Managers who attended to support their drivers and Yardley Wood Garage/Engineering for providing our fleet of 7 enviro 400's for use throughout the event.
