Edgbaston Stadium has announced that the Women’s IT20 between England and India on Saturday 12 July will be a ‘Go Green Game’, a sustainability-focused experience that helps to raise awareness of climate change.
Part of Edgbaston Stadium’s wider sustainability pledge, the Go Green Game forms part of a broader effort to reach Net Zero by 2030, in-line with Birmingham City Council’s commitment to address climate issues and promote sustainability within the city.
Reinforcing Edgbaston’s leadership in sustainable sport, the match will be the stadium’s second Go Green Game. Building on the success of the inaugural 2023 fixture, which saw the overall match carbon emissions reduce by a third, the 2025 game hopes to further reduce the overall emissions through a series of new initiatives, matchday activations and sustainable practices.
Addressing one of the biggest contributors to matchday emissions, spectator travel to games, Edgbaston has partnered with National Express West Midlands and Transport for West Midlands to encourage the use of sustainable transport options for the game.
On the day, spectators will have access to a free National Express West Midlands shuttle bus service (the 501 service) from Birmingham New Street Station. Transport for West Midlands is also providing spectators the opportunity to sign up for free travel on the wider bus network .
In-line with Edgbaston’s award-winning sustainability practices, the Go Green Game will solidify the expectation for sustainable cricket events. Alongside spectator travel, the fixture will be powered by renewable energy, complete with a fully electric pitch setup and grounds equipment. Supporters will also have access to cycle and e-bike parking, paperless ticket entry, eco-cups and biodegradable food packaging, free water refill stations and recycling points across the stadium.
On the matchday, the stadium team will also be launching new activations designed to engage fans in positive climate action. These include wildflower seed giveaways, coffee grounds collections and ‘cycle for your smoothie’ bikes, which showcases the use of pedal power to blend smoothies.
Commenting on the success of Edgbaston’s Go Green Game, Lydia Carrington, Sustainability Manager at Edgbaston Stadium, said, “The decision to host the 2025 Go Green Game represents our ongoing commitment to cut matchday emissions and hit our Net Zero goals by 2030.”
“As a venue, we’re actively working across multiple projects to support our ‘Edgbaston 4 Sustainability’ strategy, including actively reducing our energy consumption, sourcing renewable alternatives, and reducing food and general waste.“We recognise the important role we play in the community and will continue to ensure our climate-related activities help to raise awareness and promote participation with everyone from our team to spectators and local residents.”
Tim Bullock, Head of Partnerships at National Express West Midlands, said: “As part of our ongoing partnership with Edgbaston we’re really pleased to be supporting the Go Green Game initiative again this year, with our free shuttle bus service offering frequent trips starting a couple of hours before the game, and return trips to the city centre after the game.
“As the region’s largest bus operator, we play a key role in providing sustainable transport choices for passengers, helping local residents and visitors play their part in cutting harmful emissions and road congestion. One double decker bus can take up to 75 cars off the road, so not only is it more environmentally friendly, it’s convenient and cheaper on the pocket too as passengers save on fuel, parking and Clean Air Zone charges.”
