10 facts for Earth Day 2023

22nd April 2023 is Earth Day

Ahead of this year's Earth Day here are ten facts showing how our business (and your travel choices) can help us all to invest in our planet.

Ten facts for Earth Day

  1. A full double decker bus can take 75 cars off the road.
  2. Even a five-mile journey on a normal diesel bus means you emit half the carbon as you would if you went by car.
  3. If everyone switched just one car journey a month to a bus or coach instead, that would mean up to a billion fewer car journeys, saving two million tonnes of CO2!
  4. In January 2023 we announced that we are investing a record £150 million in 300 UK-made electric zero emission buses, for delivery by the end of December 2024. The buses will be deployed across the West Midlands. This will mean that over a third of our fleet will be zero emissions!
  5. In February 2020 we outlined a vision to become the UK’s most sustainable bus company, with our fleet becoming fully zero emission from 2030.
  6. Our electric vehicles produce zero carbon emissions at the tailpipe and are powered by renewable ‘green’ energy - even the heaters run off the battery!
  7. In the first 12 months of service, 29 electric buses clocked over 850.000 miles and saved 1400 tonnes of carbon dioxide going out into the atmosphere.
  8. Our entire vehicle fleet has already been converted to Euro VI engines. So even if you see an older registration bus it will still be one of the cleanest, greenest diesel buses available on the market.
  9. In its first six months the Birmingham Clean Air Zone meant that the most polluting traffic fell from 18.7% on 1st June 2021 to 9.2% in April 2022 – contributing to an overall reduction in the levels of nitrogen dioxide by 13%. Learn more about the CAZ on the Brum breathes website
  10. We’ve signed up to the West Midlands Net Zero Business Pledge and are doing our bit to make the West Midlands net zero by 2041.

So there you go, catching the bus is one of the simplest and most cost effective things you can do to fight climate change. To find out more about other changes you can make to support the planet visit the Earth Day website.
